A Look at Host Bus Adapter Cards

A Host Bus Adapter card, or HBA card, is a circuit board or integrated circuit adapter that provides physical connectivity between a host system, such as a computer or server, and networks and storage devices. In addition to physical connectivity, an HBA card also performs input and output (I/O) processing. With the addition of an HBA adapter card, the host computer’s microprocessor is no longer required to perform data storage and retrieval operations, therefore resulting in a performance boost.

There are many different components that can be connected with the help of an HBA network card. These include Serial ATA (SATA) devices, Fiber Channels, and SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface). Furthermore, any component that connects IDE (Integrated Development Environment), USB, or Ethernet are often referred to as HBAs or host adapters. HBAs are commonly mistaken for an NIC. An NIC, or network interface card, is the card that allows your personal computer to connect to a LAN (Local Area Network). Although NICs do fit the definition of an HBA, they are more commonly referred to as NICs.

Aside from physical connectivity, HBA cards offer many other benefits. The primary benefit is that the HBA card handles all communication with connected devices such as SATA, SSCI, or any other HBA compatible device. As such, the computer does not have to use its internal resources to communicate with the devices, therefore bolstering the host computer system’s performance.

In addition to the standard HBA card, there are various subtypes. One of which is the SCSI Host Bus Adapter, or the SCSI adapter. As its name suggests, this device is used to connect SCSI devices to a host computer. It should also be noted that SCSI adapters allow the host system to boot from its connected SCSI devices. Additionally, the end user is able to configure the connected SCSI device with the help of a driver installed in the host computer’s operating system.

While the HBA adapter card is a very versatile device, there are four uses that are of primary importance. The first is to provide a physical connection between a host computer and compatible devices and networks. Second, they perform input and output processing. Third, HBAs transfer data between the connected devices and host computer. Finally, they free up the resources of the host computer by conducting the data storage and retrieval operations on its own. All of these make the use of an HBA beneficial to many different applications.

One specific field in which HBA adapters play an important role is in the embedded systems development industry. Through the use of HBA adapters, users can seamlessly connect their computer to embedded systems environments and develop, program, or debug. For example, the Aardvark 12C/SPI Host Adapter allows users to interface with the embedded environment through 12C or SPI protocols as a master or slave. Furthermore, programmers in need of fast programming can use Host Adapters to develop their applications with the ability to communicate over SPI at 40 MHz or faster. Additionally, for CAN bus based developmental tasks, embedded engineers can use CAN Duo Interface to impart data on the Bus.
